leans heavily into colorful camp, yielding
many sequences thatfeel like they were
ripped straightfrom a Golden Age comic
book. Hehas a blast inventing dizzyingly
creative uses of Clark’s powers and howhe
uses them to save everyone, humans and
animals alike
Despite its gleeful embrace of superhero
zaniness, filtered through Gunn s
irreverent vision, thefilm does ask
potential and relevant questions about
self-actualization, the nature of heroism;
and the consequences ofthe “natureVs
nurture” debatethat fit well within the
Superman canon It’s an ambitious effort
that sometimes feels too ambitious,
as its
efforts to service multiple characters and
world-build can undermineits character
arcs and make you question whether
their beats are properly earned. (It’s most
apparentin Lois and Clark’s relationship:)
Despite some unevenness, Gunn gets
strong performances out of his cast
David Corenswet wears the red cape well,
and brings real dimension to Superman’s
inherent goodness andits clash with his
wavering sense of self and duty Rachel
Brosnahanis an excellent Lois Lane,
bringing the powers that beto heel with
unyielding compromise and a teasing wink.
Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthortakes some
getting used to, asheisless menacing
thanyou’d expect, but Houltis a gleeful
scenery chewer Thefilm’s greatest
