On March 14, 1982 Metallica’s first concert took place at Radio City Hall
in Anaheim California USA
The photo used to promote this concert were takenatthe home of Ron McGovney
their bassist atthe time Here’s what he wrote about the photo shoot: “Notice the pool
cue rack(slide 4) This was my living room The carpet was 1970s orange shag
Clothes were
John Kornarens; who was present at this performance recalls that Dave had
something wrong with his distortion pedal – and this entirely determined the presence
of atleast some level of heavinessin the music; because he was the only guitarist.
Hetfield only sang On
ofallthis his string broke and since he didn’teven thinkto
bringa spare guitar he was forced to restring the string right on stage An
experienced band could have made up for this hiccup by communicating with the
audience but Metallica was not yet ready for this James was so excited that he was
speechless
James Hetfieldin an interview with Kerrang! about their first concert:
“1wasjust singing and there were about 200 people there_
invited all my school
friends and Lars Ron;
Dave invited all their mates
was extremely nervous and
little uncomfortable without a guitar and during the first song Dave broke a string It
feltlike an eternity until he finally replacedit and
was
standing there feeling totally
ernbarrassed Afterward we were really disappointed and didn’t have as many
people as we did atthat first gigfor alongtime

10) The guitar belonged to Tom Quecke guitarist from Dave’s previous band Panic
Quecke passed away aroundthe time the photo was taken
